Joining as a cadet

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I need to be to join Air cadets?

We recruit male and females between the ages of 13-17, or aged 12 if you're in Year 8 at School

How much does it cost?

The Squadron has a subscription fee of £10 a month, which covers many of the activities we provide including loan of uniform. The exceptions to this are camps, and some other activities.

What if I can't afford to go?

We won't turn you away if you can't afford to be a cadet. If you have financial problems at home and can’t afford it, you can speak to our staff and we will do our best to arrange for the cost to be covered.

When do you meet?

We meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:15pm till 9:30pm

What happens if I cannot attend both Tuesday and Thursday?

You may come down for just one parade evening, but it is advisable for you to attend as often as possible so you can get the most out of your time as a cadet. Additionally, the subscription fee still applies even if you do not attend.

If I join the Air Cadets, will I have to join the RAF?

No, the Air Cadets is not a recruiting agency for the RAF. You are not obligated to join the RAF if you become a cadet, but some cadets do choose to join as their full time job when they leave. The Air Cadets will support you in what ever occupation you want to go into, and give you relevant skills for all types of employment.

What will I have to wear when I come along to a parade evening?

It is advisable to dress smartly. This can be a shirt and smart trousers for males and for females, the equivalent to this. School uniform would be approriate. If you decide you wish to stay, you may start to receive your cadet uniform within the first few weeks.

Do I have to go away on camps?

You do not have to go away on camps with the Air Cadets, but it can be a very rewarding experience if you do.
