Robert’s Gliding Success

Robert's Gliding SuccessAn Air Cadet from 22 (Sandy) Squadron has recently been awarded his silver wings after going solo as a part of an Air Cadet gliding course.

Cadet Sergeant Robert Hubbard (18) attended the week long course held at Watton Airfield in Norfolk, along with eight other chosen cadets from across East Anglia. The course, run by 611 Volunteer Gliding School, takes cadets with no gliding experience and trains them up over the week to a standard to which they can then fly the glider solo.

Also gaining his Private Pilot’s licence in February in light aircraft, Robert successfully completed the gliding course, ending with a solo flight to gain his silver gliding wings.

Robert said “After gaining a Private Pilot’s Licence with powered aircraft, I decided to challenge myself in an aircraft without an engine. Learning to flying without an engine has given me far more confidence in my flying. I thoroughly enjoyed the week, even if it was very intensive”

In the future Robert hopes to follow a career in the RAF as a pilot, or in commercial aviation.
